Aukey has been making dash cams for quite some time now, and it’s no wonder these little devices are so popular. Such as the DR01, for little money, this manufacturer offers the market an inexpensive device that does the job of him. It may not have all the features of a high-end dashcam, but it’s definitely worth a look.
In the box
Despite the affordable prices, the DR01 comes with a surprisingly generous package of mounting accessories. There is a suction cup mount, plus an adhesive mount if you want the installation to be permanent.
The usual long USB power cable is provided, but the car power adapter is not plugged in, but if you want you can buy the fast GreatCool Quick Charge 3.0 car battery charger. The Dash Cam also offers two USB ports, so you can charge your phone or connect a sat nav at the same time, assuming the latter doesn’t even have a power cable. It works perfectly with a TomTom navigator.
Aukey has included a couple of extra 3M adhesive patches in the box, and unlike pretty much any other dash cam competitor, three adhesive cable clips are also included. This will make the USB power cable around the windshield neat and tidy, and you shouldn’t need to buy anything else for this purpose.

The AUKEY dash cam comes with two mounting options. You can choose to use the standard 3M double-sided adhesive pad to mount the camera on the dashboard. Otherwise, you can also use the supplied mounting suction cup to install the camera on the windshield.
Cameras and viewing angles
Aukey DR01 is a compact car camera capable of capturing a continuous loop of Full HD 1080p video of the road in front of you.
It has a compact and lightweight design with a boxy black body (measuring 2.28x 2.24×1.25 inches) that you can recognize in an action camera like GoPro. But it is by no means very robust.
The DR01 has an action camera-like 170 degree ultra wide angle lens – the best for getting a nice wide view of the road. Light passing through the lens falls on a Sony CMOS sensor. Along with the rest of the camera hardware, that sensor captures 1080p video at 30fps or 720p video at 60fps or 30fps. Video loop is the default mode.
When the camera is on, it records clips until an inserted micro SD card (not included, you can buy a 128GB SanDisk Ultra MicroSDXC Memory Card if you want) is full. Then it will start overwriting the oldest movie.
Along with the camera hardware, the DR01 has an internal accelerometer. This G-sensor is used to detect vehicle impacts. When an impact is detected or the far left “emergency” button is pressed, the camera will prevent the current clip from being overwritten by moving it to a protected folder named “RO” on the SD card.
Should you buy it?
The Aukey DR01 is truly a no-nonsense dash cam that does the essentials for capturing your journey. This work is completed with reasonable success, considering the price and the assembly package is also complete.
So if you are looking for an extremely cheap dash cam, the Aukey DR01 is worth buying, even if it won’t fulfill all of your dash cam dreams.
AUKEY DR01 is a good dash cam. No doubt. But it has its limitations. Lack of wireless connectivity means you need to manually connect the dash cam to a laptop or computer or connect the memory card to a card reader to perform a backup. Also, it’s not very pleasant that the camera doesn’t have app support, which is evident because there’s no Wi-Fi support either.
Another not very pleasant is that the rear LCD screen is too small. The rear screen should have been at least 3 ″ mainly because it is not possible to swap the smartphone to make changes to the settings or check what has been recorded. A low price for very few dash cam features – but at least the Full HD video quality is reasonable, making the Aukey DR01 good value for money.
