The Garmin 55 is a compact car camera. Since such devices tend to be left in the car all the time, the smaller they are, the better. The Garmin 55 is smaller than a GoPro, yet it has 1,440p and has Wi-Fi too.

In the box

The box is a fairly standard Garmin branded box. There is basic information included on the outside, but nothing but basic product details. The Dash Cam includes two publications: an illustrated quick start guide and safety and product information.

Assembly

Before removing the adhesive backing, simply pay attention to where the holder will be installed. The location must be intentional because after installing the installation it is difficult to remove it.

First clean the windshield with water or alcohol and a lint-free cloth. The windshield must be free of dust, wax, oil or coating.

  • The next step remove the protective film from the mounting adhesive, press firmly into the windshield and hold for 30 seconds.
  • After installing the dash cam, you need to wait about 24 hours before installing the Garmin 55 for the adhesive to work perfectly.
  • Route the power cord to the vehicle socket. The power cord has been designed to be easily hidden and can be hidden along the back of the casing. Then connect the other end of the vehicle power cable.
  • Turn on the vehicle ignition switch to power the vehicle socket to make sure the device is turned on.

Cameras and viewing angles

The camera operates at a resolution of 2560 × 1440 (1440p) maximum, with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. If you prefer a higher frame rate, there is also an option to set it to 1920×1080 (1080p) at 60fps.

Overall video quality is acceptable, but not impressive. Daily, the camera records good quality videos. At night, the video quality is average to fair. Even on a relatively well-lit street, it is often impossible to read another car’s license plate at night.

Parking mode

When connected with a hard wire cable (click here to buy one), the Garmin 55 supports a simple event-activated parking mode.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, Garmin 55 appears to have a problem with overheating. A large percentage of users reported that the camera stops working after a couple of months. Customer support is excellent and usually replaces the camera without too much trouble.

However, many users seem to already have the second or even the third replacement device, so the problem seems to be with a high percentage of these cameras.

Another downside is that the USB cable used to power the camera is proprietary, so you can’t just use an existing cable if you’ve already installed one in your car.

Should you buy it?

Garmin 55 is at the more expensive end of the dash cam scale, but it’s worth it. The 1,440p video footage is razor sharp, and there are plenty of other security features to sweeten the deal. The smooth magnetic mount and Travelapse option further help this product outperform the competition. The lack of full control over Wi-Fi is the only significant difference, but otherwise this is a stunning dash cam.

Final thoughts

When it comes to finding the perfect dash cam, the Garmin 55 is the one. Its design is one of the most compact of any dash cam and it is pleasing how simple, secure and discreet the mounting system is.

The video quality is very good during the day and night, while adding location data with time and date to your recordings could prove invaluable if the worst happens and you need to provide evidence of an accident.
