Since 2019, Huawei has been pushing its strategy for its smart products, similar to how the company entered the smartphone market a few years ago. And this year, the company launched a number of exciting smart products including the Huawei Watch GT 2e smartwatch. The Huawei GT 2e is a new product of the GT 2 lineup. Compared to the GT 2 it is sportier but, at the same time, reserves a refined design for everyday use. The biggest difference is that the GT 2e doesn’t have a speaker for music playback. But apart from that, both GT 2 and GT 2e are almost the same in terms of functionality.

While there are marked visual differences between the Huawei Watch GT 2e and its predecessors, this new offering still manages to ensure that it retains everything that made the GT 2 watch great in the design department.

Just like its more expensive cousin, the GT 2e watch has a large round face and a thick bezel surrounding it. In terms of finish and design, the Huawei Watch GT 2 looks like an absolute stunner and looks very refined for the asking price. While this is a theme we’ve also seen with the Watch GT 2, the interesting thing is that the Watch GT 2e manages to do it, despite making some crucial design changes.

The bottom of the watch sees Huawei using high-quality plastic, from which protrudes a circular housing that holds the GT 2e watch’s fitness sensors, including the one it uses for heart rate monitoring. The Watch GT 2e’s charging mechanism is also placed on this platform.

Rounding out the watch design is a beautiful mesh strap, available in multiple colors.

Another cool thing about the Watch GT 2e is that it is quite light. In fact, even more so than the GT 2 watch, which to be fair, was quite light. And because the strap features a mesh pattern, it makes carrying the watch on your wrist very manageable even for working hours.


The Watch GT 2e ‘s body also provides water resistance with its 5ATM rating ensuring the watch can survive even if it has been submerged under water up to 50 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Fitness and Sport

Undoubtedly the Watch GT 2e’s greatest feature is the plethora of training modes available. Huawei has now included 100 training modes to help you keep track of everything from running and cycling to various strength and dance exercises. We could try to list them all here, but it would be an exercise in futility. The short version is: if you can think about it, you can follow it.

Some of the highlights of this latest range of activities include parkour, skateboarding, HIIT sessions, ballet, belly dancing and many more. It’s a bit ridiculous. But then, without testing them all, we’re not sure how useful that data is or how accurate the tracking is.

Watch GT 2e

We’ve tested a few more common sports activities like running, indoor cycling, and strength exercises, and for the most part, the GT 2e tracks them fairly accurately. Compared to our Apple Watch on outdoor runs, it showed almost exactly the same distance, pace, cadence and heart rate. Heart rate was 1-2 beats per minute different, pace was a couple of seconds per kilometer, and distance was 50 meters on a 3.6km run.

In an indoor cycling session, heart rate monitoring was also almost exactly the same. The only difference is a fairly large swing in the difference between the estimated calories burned. In a 55-minute bike session, Apple’s system estimated a total of 571 calories burned, of which 448 were “active”. On the Huawei system, it estimated a total of 659 calories.

It is on strength training that we have experienced a kind of swing. The watch seemed to track pretty well during actual activity, but the Huawei Health app on our Android phone failed to run that session to view it within the app. We’re not sure why, but it appears that while some activities may be tracked on the watch, the smartphone app doesn’t show them after syncing. If we did the same exercise, but chose “Other” as the type of workout, it would be synchronized, but not when the “Strength” option is chosen.

Aside from being a powerful workout tracker, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is a great daily activity tracker. It can track your steps and constantly monitor your heart rate, giving you daily, weekly and monthly trends. It will also automatically measure your sleep quality if you wear it at night.


A new feature is SpO2, which measures oxygen saturation levels in the blood, providing a clear indicator of what is classified as healthy and what is not using a color-coded bar around the screen. It is similar to the approach used by Huawei to monitor most metrics on the watch, in and out of training sessions. It is clear, easy to read and understand.

Like other smartwatches, the GT 2e will mirror your smartphone notifications. As always though, there is a lack of interactivity with these. It’s not like the Apple Watch or Google’s Wear OS where you can easily reply to a message. You can read them, but basically it is. You’ll need to get your phone out if you want to reply to emails or messages.


Although the Huawei Watch GT 2e has no speakers, it still supports music control. You can add music files to your Huawei Watch GT 2e watch or you can control the music on your phone via Huawei Watch GT 2e. What’s more convenient is that the Huawei Watch GT 2e can also be connected to a Bluetooth headset, making it more convenient to listen to music while exercising.


You can receive smartphone notifications on the GT 2e and the notifications come quickly, but they are not usable. You can read them, then ignore them. Often times, you can’t click on a notification to expand it, so reading more than an email’s subject line is next to impossible.

Huawei Health

Speaking of Huawei Health, you need to install the app on your Android or iOS device to pair the watch with your phone and enjoy all the features of the app.

The app provides complete data on your daily activity, exercise history, heart rate, sleep tracking and so on. The app allows you to enable notifications, continuous heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, set alarms and install software updates on the watch.


In terms of battery performance, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is excellent. The use of the Kirin A1 SoC and limited features ensure that this fitness wearable lasts for days on end on a single charge.

Although the company claims a two-week battery life with the Watch GT2e, that’s only when you’re not using much of the available fitness tracking functionality for extended periods of time. However, even if you use the watch to track your sleep, oxygen levels, and training in general, the battery should last more than a week, which in itself is pretty awesome, to say the least.

Final Thoughts

The Watch GT 2e is definitely a great smartwatch to have if you’re already using a Huawei smartphone or at least if you’re willing to give its ecosystem a chance. It’s fast, beautiful, easy to navigate – it covers all the essential features. Having another ecosystem on the phone might be problematic for a certain group of users, but with so many modern phones coming with 128GB (or more) of internal storage, this is far less of an issue. Initial setup is tricky on a non-Huawei phone, but once the process is done and you’ve spent a day or two with the watch, all the initial anxiety will be over and you will be happy you bought this Huawei Watch GT 2e from It looks amazing, even if it doesn’t have a speaker or microphone.
