After hooking India to its Mi Band fitness tracker line, Xiaomi recently launched the Mi Watch. The Mi Watch is meant to be a premium upgrade for existing Mi Band users or the first smartwatch for those not impressed with the fitness tracker’s sporty aesthetic. With its sleek metal case, AMOLED display, and compelling feature set, the smartwatch appears to be a great buy on paper. But does the Mi Watch have what it takes to replicate the success of the Mi band formation?

Let’s find out together.

  • Cheap
  • Large and bright display
  • Simple and elegant design
  • Training analysis provided by Firstbeat

In the box

Xiaomi Mi Watch comes in a rectangular box with the smartwatch, magnetic battery charger and a user manual inside.

The case is made of soft touch plastic which is comfortable and lightweight. There are two buttons on the right side: one that pulls up the all apps screen and another for workouts. They’re satisfying to press and it’s always great to see physical buttons on fitness-focused wearables. Touchscreens aren’t fun to use while exercising.

The AMOLED display is sharp and gets very bright. You can read the display well even outdoors in direct sunlight. There is also an ambient light sensor, so it will automatically adjust to the lighting conditions.

Xiaomi Wear

You need to download the Xiaomi Wear application to use the watch on a phone. The Xiaomi Wear app is more pleasant to use than the MiFit app, even though it uses the same foundations. The interface is lighter and clearer. It also allows you to customize the watch face and many choices are possible.

Xiaomi Mi Watch is rated at 5 ATM for water resistance which means you will be able to catch it while swimming (up to 50m diving).

Mi Watch

One of the main points is certainly represented by the autonomy, entrusted to a 420 mAh unit rechargeable via magnetic PINs (and the appropriate base). According to reports, Xiaomi Mi Watch Global is able to offer up to 16 days of autonomy compared to just 2 hours of charging.

In terms of connectivity we have support for Bluetooth 5.0 BLE and the possibility of using the integrated GPS.

Final Thoughts

The Mi Watch seems like a tempting proposition in the pseudo-smartwatch space: SpO2, integrated GPS and a battery life of up to 16 days.

However, there are clearly things Xiaomi needs to fix. It would be nice to see more smartwatch features and a fully crafted voice assistant on the watch. The blood oxygen sensor is too thin to be actually useful. And as cool as the Xiaomi Wear app is, it might use some polishing. Fortunately, all of these things can be fixed with software updates.

Ultimately, if you are looking for a solid, no-nonsense smartwatch, you will not be disappointed by purchasing the Xiaomi Mi Watch.
